The quick answer
Screen size alone is not enough. Match the mounting interface, supported weight range and desk attachment to your actual equipment.
In this guide
1. Identify the mounting interface · 2. Check the monitor weight without its stand · 3. Inspect the desk attachment · 4. Plan the movement envelope · 5. Leave room for the cables
A monitor arm can free desk space and make positioning more flexible, but buying one by screen size alone is a common mistake. Before comparing finishes or cable covers, confirm that the arm, screen and desk are compatible. The following checklist is a buying workflow, not a replacement for installation instructions.
1. Identify the mounting interface
Look for the mounting specification in the monitor manual. Ergotron explains that the VESA interface includes the hole pattern and attachment details. Common desktop patterns include 75 × 75mm and 100 × 100mm, but the exact monitor’s documentation should decide what you need.
Check whether the mounting area is recessed and whether the supplied plate can reach it without blocking nearby ports. A proprietary stand-release mechanism is not automatically a standard VESA interface. If an adapter is needed, identify the correct one before ordering the arm.
2. Check the monitor weight without its stand
Compare the relevant screen weight with the arm manufacturer’s supported range. Gas-spring arms may specify a minimum as well as a maximum. Also follow any model-specific requirements for unusually large, deep or curved displays.
An inch rating is useful for clearance, but it is not a substitute for the weight specification. Avoid building a plan around a load at the edge of a published limit without checking the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for that screen.
3. Inspect the desk attachment
Measure the desk thickness and inspect the underside where the clamp would sit. Drawers, metal frames, cable trays and beveled edges can interfere with the attachment. A grommet mount requires its own suitable opening and installation conditions.
Check the desk manufacturer’s guidance, particularly for glass, hollow-core or delicate surfaces. Do not assume that a reinforcement plate makes every desk suitable. A clear compatibility answer before purchase is better than improvising after the monitor is balanced above the worktop.
4. Plan the movement envelope
Picture the monitor in its actual positions: centered for work, pushed back when the desk is clear, and perhaps turned for sharing. Measure wall clearance and the space needed by the arm’s joints. The arm should solve a positioning problem without creating a collision with shelves, speakers or the wall.
For two monitors, draw their approximate outlines on paper and decide which will be your main screen. A dual arm may be tidy, while two separate arms may offer more freedom. The better choice depends on how you use and move the screens.
5. Leave room for the cables
Cables need slack through the intended movement range. Check where the display’s ports face and how the arm guides cables around moving joints. A neat cable route should not pull on connectors when the screen is raised or rotated.
Before purchasing, save the monitor model, mounting pattern, weight without stand, desk thickness and arm model in one note. During installation, follow both manufacturers’ instructions, including fastener size and length. Compatibility is a set of matching details, not a promise attached to the words “universal mount.”
