Your New Monitor Is Still at 60Hz? Check These Windows 11 Settings

Find the correct display, select its refresh rate and work through missing-mode problems in a sensible order.

The quick answer
Check the selected display and connection first. A monitor’s advertised maximum may only be available through particular inputs or at particular resolutions.

Connecting a high-refresh monitor does not guarantee that Windows immediately selects its highest mode. Before changing game settings or ordering a new cable, confirm what the computer is actually sending to the display. A short, orderly check is more useful than changing several options at once.

Select the correct display

In Windows 11, open Settings, then System, Display and Advanced display. If more than one screen is attached, select the monitor you intend to change. Microsoft documents the current refresh-rate control on this page. Choose a supported rate from the refresh-rate menu and confirm the change if prompted.

Check the resolution as well. Microsoft notes that rates marked with an asterisk may require a resolution change. A number that appears in the list is therefore not always the same combination of sharpness and refresh rate you thought you were selecting.

If the expected option is missing

Open the monitor’s manual and find its supported timing table. Locate the exact input in use: the maximum over HDMI can differ from the maximum over DisplayPort, and some advertised modes require a menu option. Compare that information with the output specification of your computer or graphics card.

Next, simplify the connection. If a dock or adapter is involved, temporarily test a direct connection when your equipment supports one. Change one component at a time and record the result. Swapping the cable, port, resolution and driver together makes it difficult to learn which part was responsible.

Keep a small troubleshooting record

Use a note with five fields: computer output, cable, monitor input, selected resolution and selected refresh rate. Add a sixth field for anything between the computer and screen. This is especially helpful for laptops that have several similar-looking USB-C ports with different capabilities.

For example, if direct connection exposes the desired mode but the dock does not, the dock path becomes the next thing to investigate. That does not automatically mean the dock is defective; it may have a lower supported mode or share bandwidth across multiple displays.

Check the game after the desktop

A game may have its own display mode, resolution, refresh-rate setting or frame cap. Compare those settings with the desktop configuration. An FPS counter reports rendered frames; it is not proof that the monitor is receiving the same number of refreshes per second.

Dynamic Refresh Rate in Windows and variable-refresh gaming are related display concepts but are not interchangeable menu choices. If a setting is unavailable on your hardware, do not force it with unverified registry edits or downloaded configuration files.

  • Confirm the desired resolution and refresh rate in Advanced display.
  • Check the game’s own settings and any deliberate frame cap.
  • Keep the monitor manual available while testing inputs.
  • Use official driver and firmware sources for your exact hardware.

Once the connection works, save the successful configuration in your notes. It gives you a useful reference the next time you change a dock, move the PC or reinstall the operating system.

Cables to consider after checking your ports

Only replace a cable when your troubleshooting points to the connection. A higher cable rating cannot add a display mode that the computer or monitor does not support.

Silkland DisplayPort 2.1 DP80 cable — 6.6 ft

A full-size DisplayPort cable listed with an 80Gbps rating. Check that both ends of your setup use DisplayPort, and choose a length that reaches without pulling on either connector.

Silkland S2213 Ultra High Speed HDMI cable — 6.6 ft

The linked HDMI cable is listed at 48Gbps. Compare it when the monitor’s HDMI input supports your target mode; the cable alone will not remove an HDMI-port or dock limitation.
